The University of Parma dates back to before the year 1000, already in the Middle Ages the city was a renowned seat of attracting students from far away countries.
With the advent of the Farnese in the city, were established the college of nobles, the library Palatine, the Academy of Fine Arts and the botanical garden.
After the Napoleonic period, the university returned to its traditional configuration during the Duchy of Marie Louise of Austria and developed steadily from the end of the nineteenth century.
