ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Monticelli Terme, a renowned spa resort built in the 1920s, known for its highly saline waters and particularly rich in bromine, is now a well-equipped holiday resort. The Terme di Monticelli, an oasis of peace immersed in a centuries-old park of twenty-five hectares, offers classic thermal baths and specialist advice, thanks to the professionalism of its medical staff and the most sophisticated equipment. The ancient spa, called “Terme Borrini”, is also worth a visit for its monumental importance. Among the most important examples of the spa are the Church of San Donnino Martire, Villa Mariotti Micheli and the Temple of San Giulio. Ideal base for visiting the castles of Parma, the places of Verdi and the Lands of Matilde di Canossa, the town is also crossed by the Road of Ham and Wines of the Hills.

 INFORMATION ABOUT THE TERRITORY

The existence of an Etruscan settlement on pre-existing remains in the territory that extends near the Parish Church and ‘confirmed by the findings of 1871 made by Pigorini, evidence of Roman settlements are instead the place names and traces of the centuriation still present today. The first news of Monticelli can be found in the X century, when a first nucleus developed around a defensive tower; then again in a deed of sale of 1186 and in a document of 1114 which also involved the Countess Matilda of Canossa.

The feud was dominated by the Bishop of Parma until the middle of 1100, which saw the birth of the Community ‘of Parma: from that time Monticelli depended directly on it. In 1314 I passed to the Da Correggio family, under whose Lordship the poet Francesco Petrarca was a guest of the Castle, who deeply loved these places, and after various events it became the dominion of the Visconti family, Lords of Milan, until the end of 1400.

After the death of Gian Galeazzo Visconti (1402), following local wars and other events, Monticelli and the surrounding territories were sacked and burned. In 1406 Monticelli, Marano, Martorano, Tortiano, Basilicagoiano and Montechiarugolo were handed over to the Torelli Seigniory.

After being elevated to County in 1428, the territory of Monticelli passed quietly over two centuries, shaken from time to time by the upheavals caused by the defeat of the State of Milan and the support given on that occasion to the Sforza Family. From 1612 the feud was dominated by the Ducal Chamber and never again enfeoffed because of its important military position. From that moment on, Monticelli lived in the shadow of the nearby city.

With the discovery of thermal waters (1924) by the Borrini family, Monticelli took its modern name and regained new impetus, developing around this important factor of economic recovery and at the same time of environmental protection.
