The Monte Prinzera Nature Reserve is located in the western Apennines of Parma, between the valleys of the rivers Taro, Ceno and Baganza. The reserve takes its name from Monte Prinzera, which looks like a dark rock among the soft hills of the middle valley of the Taro. The mountain is 736 meters high and has a rough and wild appearance almost “lunar”. It is a relief of ophiolite, volcanic rock that favors the presence of unique habitats, which allow the birth and growth of particular species of spontaneous flora.

The Monte Prinzera Nature Reserve is rich in oak and chestnut woods and very rare species of plants such as the Alisso di Bertoloni and Biscutella. Both the excellent geographical position and the climatic factors have led to the concentration in this limited area of an exemplary multitude of landscapes, biodiversity, ecological phenomena and human testimonies of the Parma Apennines, which have made it a true environmental laboratory.

Over the centuries, the unmistakable profile of Monte Prinzera has symbolically represented a reference point for more or less famous travellers: from Charlemagne to Frederick Barbarossa, up to Charlemagne VIII they crossed the mountain with their armies.  Many pilgrims also crossed the stretch of the Apennines that from the Val Sporzana reaches the Passo della Cisa, proceeding along the well known Via Francigena that crosses the park.
