Pieve di Barbiano

The Parish Church of Barbiano, or Parish Church of Sant’Antonino Martire, is located in Barbiano, a small hilly hamlet of Felino. The first historical reference to it dates back to 1230, documented in the parchment of the ”Decime”, in which we find the church indicated with the name of “Sant’Antonio di Ciriano”, ”Plebs S. Antonini de Ciriano. Ad Episcopum”. In the ancient maps, in fact, the place is called in different ways: Cirliano (in a parchment of 918) or Celliano (in a deed of sale of 1028). It was only in 1560 that the name “Barbiano” appeared for the first time on a document by Cristoforo della Torre.

Built on a natural balcony overlooking the Po valley, from its churchyard you can enjoy, on clear days, an enchanting spectacle, seeing the bell towers of Parma, the Torrazzo di Cremona and the profiles of Reggio Emilia and Modena with the unique background of the Alps. Archduchess Maria Luigia of Austria used to climb this hill during the summer season to enjoy the cool evening breezes. Clearly visible along the entire perimeter of the church and the adjacent rectory, the humble materials of use, consisting of stones of the stream Baganza. The bell tower, stumpy and sloping, reveals its original nature as a watchtower, appropriately raised and transformed to support the bells. The only original evidence of the parish church is preserved in the lower part of this bell tower, while the remaining perimeter of the complex originates in 1775, following a reconstruction of the site.

The interior of the church is simple and decent and has a structure with cross vaults that extend into a single nave. A splayed window can be seen at the top, highlighting the triangular pediment. The parish church is dedicated to Saint Antoninus the Martyr, whose cult, very ancient, is very much felt in the province of Piacenza. On the relics of the saint, a soldier of the Theban Legion, were carried out several reconnaissances by various bishops, including: Sigifredo, Malabalia, Bernardino Scotti and others. A local legend says that his martyrdom took place near Travo, around 303 AD.
