Pieve di Arola

Arola is a small hamlet in the municipality of Langhirano. Here there are two parish churches. The oldest parish church, of which little more than two arches remain, is located above the village, near the cemetery (today only a few fragments are visible near a red brick building); the current church, which can be visited and used for ceremonies, is located at the beginning of the village, near the main road.

The first church dates back to the sixth century, in fact some authors define it as “ancient”. The first evidence of its existence dates back to 1094, the year in which it is mentioned in an act of sale of land. An earthquake in 1818 almost completely destroyed the apse and most of the left side of the building, which was then abandoned and underwent a conservative restoration only at the end of the twentieth century. Of this construction we can see today two portals of white sandstone squared with a round arch. On the right side, however, stands a pilaster. Still visible on the ground is the imprint of the ancient narthex, fallen with the earthquake. Thanks to a document dated 1481, today we can imagine how it was once the parish church. We know that the structure of the building was a single nave with five altars and a sacristy.

The current church, dedicated to St. Martin, is surmounted by a triangular tympanum, at the center of which is inserted a Maltese cross that is aligned with the underlying half-moon window and the simple stone portal.  The square bell tower is located on the north-west side of the building. The interior has a single nave, with two side chapels, one on each side and a semicircular apse, slightly higher than the classroom. The entire building has a barrel vaulted roof, painted in the nave with geometric motifs that symbolize a starry sky and, above the cornice, medallions containing half-busts of Saints and Saints. In the apse there is the figure of Jesus Christ blessing, flanked by two angels.
