The Monte Fuso Provincial Park was established in 1972 thanks to the efforts of Dr. Bruno Sassi, local veterinarian. The park covers an area of 45 hectares on the top of Monte Lavacchio, in the hamlet of Scurano in the municipality of Neviano degli Arduini.

The landscape of Monte Fuso is the typical one of high hill-mountain and is divided into two particular types of ecosystems; the first is composed of mixed deciduous forests, which represent about 75% of the area while the second is composed of permanent polyphyte meadows, which represent 25% of the entire park.

There are many native tree species such as oak, chestnut, cherry, walnut and wild apple.  In the forest there is also a centuries-old “Big Lime tree”. In the Park’s Fauna Centre more than 100 ungulates live in a state of semi-freedom, in fact during walks in the woods it is not uncommon to find specimens of deer, fallow deer and mouflon.

In addition to the Fauna Centre, there are also some enclosures for educational purposes where children and those who cannot meet the animals of Parma’s zootechnical biodiversity, such as the black pig of Parma, the Cornigliese sheep and the turkey of Parma and Piacenza, have been built.
