The Carrega Woods Park was established in 1982 and was the first natural park in the Emilia-Romagna region. It extends for about 1300 hectares on the river terraces of the river Taro and the river Baganza, mainly in the municipalities of Collecchio and Sala Baganza.

The woods and hedges cover about half of the 1300 hectares of the park and some of the wooded areas that characterize it today are witnesses to the different uses that over the centuries have affected this territory.  In fact, the rich habitat of the Carrega Woods Park is the result of the interaction between natural phenomena and human activities.

Most of the wooded species are made up of chestnut and beech trees, planted in the early 1900’s and also are frequent manna ash, black locust, maple and oak trees alternating with conifers and broadleaf trees. Starting from late summer and throughout the autumn, in the Park you can find about 400 different species of mushrooms such as the grey morel, the budding vetch and the precious blackthorn. The roe deer is the symbol of the Park and it is easy to find it grazing in the most open areas or walking in silence in the woods.
