“The Via Romea, along the pilgrim’s path” is an important itinerary that allows you to walk and rediscover part of the Via Romea in the Province of Parma, once travelled by pilgrims from England to Rome climbing the Parma Apennines.
The first significant stop on the route is the Pieve di Fidenza (now a cathedral), one of the most beautiful examples of Romanesque architecture in the Parma area. Continue south towards Parma along the Via Emilia to stop at the Pieve di San Pancrazio, a Romanesque structure dressed in neoclassical style.
Not far away is the Pieve di Vicofertile dedicated to San Geminiano, which, less timidly, shows itself in its Romanesque splendour. Continuing towards the Apennines, the Pieve di Gaione, which stands on a previous Roman settlement, looks at the clearer days towards the hills. Aiming at the latter, the route will lead to the Pieve di Fornovo, dedicated to the Holy Virgin of the Assumption, which welcomes with its beautiful stone facade.
The route ends in the mountains in the Pieve di Berceto, now a cathedral dedicated to San Moderanno and gave refreshment to Sigeric, Archbishop of Canterbury, who in the account of the journey that was taking him on a pilgrimage to Rome in 990, appoints the task on the Via Francigena “Sancte Moderane”.
