INFORMATION ON THE TERRITORY AND PLACES OF INTEREST

Already mentioned in the 11th century as Torclara, the Castle of Torrechiara was rebuilt between 1448 and 1460 by Pier Maria Rossi in honour of his beloved Bianca Pellegrini, becoming a sumptuous residence.

The castle perfectly preserves its late medieval square-shaped structure, between four towers and an imposing crenellated curtain wall. It is accessed through a long covered entrance that leads to the courtyard of honor, where there is the small church of San Nicomede whose door is studded with monograms of Bianca and Pier Maria.

Inside, the old kitchen, the room of Jupiter, the Pergola, the Landscapes, the Victory, the Angels, the Velarium and the Coats of Arms have frescoes made in the Sforza period by Cesare Baglione. On the upper floor stands the Hall of Acrobats, decorated by artists of the school of Baglione and Paganino.

Particular attention should be paid to the Golden Room, whose name derives from the leaves of pure gold that once covered the tiles on the walls. The room still preserves a rare cycle of frescoes attributed to Benedetto Bembo depicting scenes from the ritual of chivalrous love and the celebration of the bond between Bianca and Pier Maria. The coats of arms of the two beloved ones can be seen here, two hearts with the phrases Digne et in aeternum (worthily and eternally) and Nunc et semper (now and forever), testifying to the eternity of their earthly love.

The Golden Room overlooks a large loggia built at the end of the fifteenth century, when the castle lost its original military functions and became a residence.
