INFORMATION ABOUT THE TERRITORY

Fornovo Taro is located at the entrance of two important valleys and has always been a point of passage, inevitable, the link between the Po Valley and the Apennines. Heading towards the centre of Fornovo Taro, we walk along the Via Francigena, the route of the pilgrims who, from the Middle Ages to the present day, intend to reach Rome. A must see is the Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta, a splendid example of Romanesque architecture and sculpture. The masterpiece of the church is the slab carved with the Martyrdom of Santa Margherita. Continuing along the road towards the Cisa pass, you come to the village of Sivizzano. The archaeological excavations confirm the hypothesis that already in Roman times the Val Sporzana was very popular, as it is a link between the colonies of Parma and Luni, as documented, in Roncolungo, the remains of a Roman villa rustica. In the Middle Ages, the road maintained the same course as the Romea. For those who wish to alternate between car journeys and trekking and nature walks, it is possible to reach the Reserve of Monte Prinzera through the Statale della Cisa, an ophiolitic area, a volcanic rock with a “lunar” aspect, of great beauty and rare flowers. In a territory of limited extension dominated by the mountain of the same name (736 m a.s.l.) a set of natural and environmental elements of exceptional interest, whose characteristics have no equal in other regional parks and reserves. Another interesting itinerary, route, between nature and work culture, is a visit to the Vallezza oil site: a journey to discover a lost job, fragments of the stories of men, objects and the territory, protagonists of an oil industry at its dawn. Also not to be missed is the Guatelli Museum a few kilometres from Fornovo and the A15 tollbooth in Ozzano Taro, an extraordinary collection of work and non-work objects that together constitute a great work of art.
