INFORMATION ON THE TERRITORY

In the Middle Ages the Benedictine monks reclaimed the land, recovering it for agriculture.

From 1303 to 1458 Colorno was a feud of the noble da Correggio family, then passed to the Sanseverino until 1612.

With Barbara, in the second half of the 16th century, the castle became an important centre of culture. From 1612 to 1731 Colorno passed to the Farnese family, dukes of Parma, who laid down their summer residence there towards the end of the 17th century.

During this period radical transformations were made to the Doge’s Palace and the Garden and important buildings were built, including the Aranciaia.

In 1748 the Duchy of Parma passed to the Bourbons, thus beginning a new happy period for Colorno, both from the urbanistic, artistic and cultural point of view. Everything changed thanks to the wife of the Duke of Parma Don Philip of Bourbon, the famous Louise Elisabeth, first daughter of the King of France Louis XV, who transformed the Palace of Colorno into a small Versailles according to the French taste. With the annexation to France, Parma became a department of the Napoleonic Empire.

In 1816 Maria Luigia, ex-wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, became duchess of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla, making numerous restorations and improvements to the Palace of Colorno. After the unification of Italy in 1861, a period of plundering and abandonment began, which began to face only in the second half of our century.
