The village is known for its fortress, which recalls the power of the Reds, but even more so for the cooked shoulder of San Secondo, which goes well with the excellent food of parmesan cheese: Felino salami, culatello di Zibello, Parma ham, and the nearby Piacenza with the Piacenza cup, to be accompanied by libations of Fortana di San Secondo (or Fortanina), Lambrusco, Malvasia. It is also an area of Parmigiano Reggiano.
It is one of the lowland castles of Parma, together with Polesine Parmense, Soragna, Roccabianca, Fontanellato, Colorno, Montechiarugolo, which stood to defend the coastal lands between the Po and Taro, as well as the many castles of the Apennine hills defended the mountain passes.
